Ceremonial Cacao Recipe

This is not my recipe.

I learned all I know from my teachers Anchoring the Light, Maestro Puma and the teachings and wisdom of the Andean Cosmovision, the Lineage of the 7 Rays and the Wilka Suyu community, who I have trained under since first becoming a ceremonialist in 2019.

So you could say I’ve also perfected the recipe after almost 8 years of making ceremonial cacao consistently.

You will need...

  • Ceremonial grade cacao (30 grams is a standard ceremonial dose)

  • A mug of filtered water (use the same mug each time to amplify the magic when you sit)

  • Cayenne pepper

  • Maple syrup

Step 1: Intention is everything

Set your space, and do not rush. Use scent, music and intention to infuse your space before you even begin.

Step 2: Start with sacred smoke

Use sacred smoke to clear every utensil and ingredient you use - the water, your pot, your mug, the whisk, the spoon, the cacao - all of it.

Step 3: Infuse gratitude

Feel deep gratitude as you clear, repeating "thank you" as you go, and start to notice in your body or mind any intentions that may already be landing for you.

Step 4: Heat your water

Heat your water over the stove and bring it to just before boiling, then turn off the heat.

Step 5: Add your cacao

Whisk as the cacao melts and then add the heat back very low.

(Do not bring it to a boil with the cacao added as it destroys the properties of the medicine...and the taste!)

Step 6: Add your maple syrup

This will depend on how sweet you like yours, so test as you go.

Monk fruit is a great substitute if you prefer sugar-free.

Step 7: Add your cayenne

Do not skip this part! The cayenne is what activates the ceremonial constituents of the medicine. It is less for taste and more for energy, so a tiny pinch is more than enough.

Take a pinch and offer it into the far back, front, and both sides of the pot, plus the centre. This is to activate each of the sacred gateways and direction portals of the Chakana medicine wheel.

You can simply add your pinch to the centre if you prefer.

Step 8: Whisk and pour

Whisk again over a low heat, reaching just before simmering point. It should be nice and creamy - no milk needed!

Pour into your mug. Place your hands over your cacao and close your eyes, taking a moment of gratitude for the medicine.

Sip and Enjoy
